“Tug Cornell” burning bio - Donated By Burt’s Reliable

Greenport NY, August 13th –East End Maritime Institute Chairman and Tug Cornell Captain Joshua Y. Horton announced today that the Tug Cornell received her first load of Bio-diesel donated by Burts’ Reliable of Southold.

“The tugboat industry is larger than it ever has been and we want to train mariners to understand, appreciate and utilize the environmental resources that are available to them” stated Horton.

The “Tug Cornell” is run by the East End Maritime Institute and serves as a maritime training platform.  EEMI also places its students in positions in the workboat industry.

“At 1600 horsepower the Cornell can burn a lot of fuel.  Through engineering efficiencies and by utilizing bio-diesel we can burn a lot less and a lot cleaner” Horton continued.

“We hope to set an industry standard by using Bio-diesel.  John Romanelli and Burt’s Reliable are making this possible with their first donation of 500 gallons” Horton concluded.

Burt’s Reliable provides both Bio-diesel for commercial vehicles and Bio-fuel for commercial and residential home heating purposes and is the first provider of Bio-fuel on Long Island.

Burt’s President, John Romanelli stated, “EEMI is a great program and we are proud to be the Tug’s Chief Environmental Sponsor.  Utilizing bio products is a responsibility we should all share in.”

Greenport Mayor David Nyce added, “The Tug Cornell is a welcome addition to the Greenport waterfront.  It has brought additional people to the village and into the marina.  The use of Bio-diesel for the tug underscores the Institute’s commitment to progressive education and leading by example.”

The Tug Cornell is owned by Lehigh Maritime and chartered by the East End Maritime Institute as a training vessel.  She is 106’ long and was built in Oyster Bay Long Island in 1950 at the famous and now extinct Jakobson’s Shipyard.
